Less than a year later they were expecting their first child. Willie was heartbroken when both Frederica and their baby died in childbirth. Willie told one of his nieces that he never wanted anyone else and could never settle anywhere for long after his great loss. Hugh Mosman, his cousin, was a bachelor and they travelled the world together.
At one time around 1892 he was in partnership as a horse and cattle auctioneer in Brisbane and he may have even spent a few years as a farmer on the South Island of New Zealand.
