Finally a couple of things that didn’t fit elsewhere.
Mosman family name
Mosman isn’t a Scottish name as it has no connection to any clan, and the family possibly came from Central Europe. Others have suggested that it is Scottish based on “Scots mos ‘moss bog’ + man ‘man’ - a person who lives at a boggy place”. I prefer the latter.
Mos(s)man place names
The Mosman family has left an indelible mark on the geography of Australian place names. A quick browse through Google Maps found these places.
- Mosman Bay, NSW. The site of the old whaling station where the Mosman Australian adventure started.
- Mosman, NSW. The prestige harbourside suburb named after Archibald and site of “The Nest”.
- Mossman Street, Armidale. Site of the original Bank Cottage.
- Mosman Street, Charters Towers. Named after Hugh Mosman who discovered gold at Charters Towers.
- Mosman Terrace, Raymond Terrace, NSW. Near George’s Burroull Station.
- Mosman Swamp, near Seaham NSW. Also near George’s Burroull Station.
- Mosman Park, Charters Towers. Another memorial to Hugh.
- Mosman Park, near Fremantle, WA.
- Mossman, Queensland, Town near Port Douglas named for Celecia.
